There’s Strength in Numbers for Finding a Cure for Breast Cancer

Manchester, VT – The power of networking is a given in the corporate world but it might not be the first thought to pop into the heads of those who are planning to join the throng at the 18th Annual Komen VT-NH Race for the Cure, Saturday, July 17, at Hildene Meadows in Manchester, Vermont. But it should be.

Consider, for example, how forming a team can boost donations. In 2009, Team Killington was the Overall Top Fund-Raising Team, bringing in $9,512.25. In the Friends & Family team category, Life is Good raised $6,485, Mona's Milers added $2,450 and Team Severance raised $2,020.

As for Corporate teams, Team Realtor, the Vermont Association of Realtors’ team, notched up $3,860 the team from the Southwestern Vermont Health Center came in with a healthy $2,501.00 and Eat, Drink, Ski, a team put together by the Inn at West View Farm, Brew Your Own magazine and Magic Mountain, dished up $2,282.00.

Not a joiner? Not a problem. One person can move mountains when they reach out to friends, family and co-workers for pledges. If each walker or runner asks ten friends to pledge $10 each – The Power of 10 – that’s a quick $100 for the cure. Of course, you don’t have to stop at ten.

In 2009, Carri Rubinstein, a survivor and tireless volunteer, delivered an eye-popping $19,455 in pledges, followed by Eddie Gerstein who brought in $7,081 and Marsha Reardon added $3,525. The list of race participants who individually brought in $500 and more would include 20 more names.

Through events like the Komen VT-NH Race for the Cure, the VT-NH Affiliate has netted more than $6.7 million in 18 years. Of that, more than $1.7 million supported Komen’s research program and more than $5 million underwrote breast cancer education, screening and treatment in Vermont and New Hampshire.
