Nancy Brinker started the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
in 1982 in memory of her sister, Susan, who died from breast cancer
at the age of 36. The foundation is a national non-profit organization
with Komen Race for the Cure® events in 112 cities across
the country. Through early funding of basic research, Komen has
laid the groundwork for some of today's most promising breast
cancer treatments. Its purpose is:
- To provide
funding for breast cancer research, education, screening and
treatment.
- To make
mammography available to medically underserved women who should
be screened according to the Komen Foundation and American Cancer
Society guidelines.
- To promote
positive awareness, education and early detection of breast
cancer among women of all ages. When the disease is confined
to the breast, the five year survival rate is over 95%.
The Foundation
is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization as determined by the Internal
Revenue Service.
The Foundation is approved as a participant in the Combined Federal
Campaign(CFC) and is a national federation member of Independent
Charities of America (ICA) and Health and Medical Research Agencies.
The Komen Race for the Cure® series is the largest series
of 5k runs in the United States. Since its origination in Dallas
in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure® series has grown from
one local race to a national series of 112 five kilometer (5k)
and one mile fitness runs/walks with more than 1,000,000 participants.
National sponsors include Yoplait, National Presenting Sponsor;
National Sponsors: American Airlines, Ford Division, Kellogg's,
and New Balance Atheletic Shoe.
Each year, the Foundation's Grant Program award project grants
and fellowships in basic and clinical research, and grants in
the areas of breast cancer education, treatment and screening
projects for the medically underserved. Since its inception, the
Foundation has awarded over 583 grants from its Grant Fund to
